The brittle unbearable rests in your palm. Will you close your fist or won’t you, and why?

You can call me Cicero, I'm from California, generally get into indie PC games these days, and I'm a longtime lover of quality LPs (my favorite LPer is probably supergreatfriend, I'd say), though I've never contemplated doing LPing before until recently. It's mostly because so many LP communities have this hostile elitism where there's this unspoken vibe of like... "Please don't bother adding to the dump that is the majority of LPs on the internet unless you're absolutely excellent. The majority of LPs are terrible, so don't add to the problem."...and I guess that last part is true if you look at the thousands of videos of people mumbling on YouTube over grainy video, but I really just want to do LPing because I think it'll be fun for me and fun for the forums I run. The problem is, whenever I get the mic in front of me I can't talk for more than 20 seconds without immediately cracking up or turning off the recording or entering dead silence because it doesn't take long for me to become aware of the fact that I'm just talking to myself while playing a videogame (essentially). The weird thing is that I think I possess some semblance of wit, charisma, and a voice that isn't terrible (but isn't great either)...but not only that, I've never had any problem with public speaking, I'm constantly getting into debates during my classes and plan to go to law school, giving speeches and public speaking hasn't ever been an issue with me. Yet when I get in front of the mic, I get paralyzed and have a habit of inexplicably doing voices that are slightly-not-mine, just slight unconscious drifting accents instead of my real voice probably because of my fear. I still haven't recorded anything longer than my intro, though I'm keeping at it over and over. I'm not even sure I can LP, I wish I could just release a BAD LP of me mumbling while playing videogames or something, I can't even do that. I think it'd actually be easier for me if I were standing in front of a big audience giving a speech or something, I don't know what's wrong with me. I think it's because I'm talking to myself, essentially (you get what I mean)...it'd be easier for me if I had a physical audience or someone standing in front of me. Just sitting in a room talking to yourself is so alien to me. This might be the farthest I ever get in the world of LPing. I was gonna say "Tonight I'm gonna play Call of Duty Ghosts" but then I cracked myself up and it was another fail. I wonder if it's not for the best sometimes given the plethora of terrible LPing already out there. http://tinypic.com/player.php?v=2mdia82&s=5 Edited by Cicero, Jun 11 2013, 09:34 AM.

Finnish and Absolutely Luminous!

Oi! Welcome to the VERY GREY forums of LPS! I agree that the elitism surrounding LPing (and you know, almost anything) is pretty bad, but hey, that's why we have this place! We just want to entertain people and have fun while doing it (who gets entertained if you're not having fun anyway?). While it is true there are a LOT of bad LPs around, prejudice is never good :oo + You know, I think intentions override results, aka. if you put lots of effort in, it's good. Hmm... I never had any trouble with speaking into a microphone, but that's only because I talk... a lot. To myself, too. Quite a lot, actually. But this is something many people struggle with; getting comfortable with talking into a microphone and sounding like.. well, themselves. It'll come to you in time, I promise. It's just a matter of getting used to it; just do it as much as you can and you'll eventually feel completely at ease doing it. Even with me, my first LPs were absolutely horrendous (have since been removed haha, embarrassment), but doing it for long enough did bunk up my confidence toward it quite a bit and now I'm perfectly happy with how I commentate and sound ^^ ...Anyway, welcome to the forums, and remember to have a freaking glorious, luminous ball! Cheers! |

I mean I was reading a thread for letsplayforum.net (I hope it's not against the rules to mention/link to them?) and it astonished me how pseudo-intellectual/pretentious/arrogant/elitist, but most of all...hostile, they seemed. I appreciated their points whether I agreed or disagreed with them and I appreciate those who look at LPs seriously as their art, but all of them just seemed so constantly angry and acted so superior (whatever, you don't like PewDiePie, I find him annoying and don't watch him at all either, but why are you so ANGRY about PewDiePie?). They only get further enraged by the appearance of innocent live-commentary-loving noobs (who have no idea what they're about to walk into) who'd just be talking about how they do LPs for fun and chill out (which would of course only stoke the flames even worse), it's an astonishing read. http://www.letsplayforum.net/showthread.php?4600-Post-Commentary-vs-Live-Commentary Of course the problem might also be that I'm trying to start with a solo live commentary LP and that's probably way harder than if I had a bud to record online with. I'll keep trying, but I've literally just been doing 30 second fails over and over. Maybe eventually they'll get longer and longer? Here's hoping.

Oh man, all that elitism on other LP forums is astonishing, I can't believe how uppity people get about that sometimes, particularly on letsplayforum.net - being a live, blind commentator there is a bit like walking into flaming house wearing a massive beard. As a live, blind commentator (:P) I MUCH prefer it here, we have so many cool folks - so welcome dude, hope you have a grand old time here ![]() --------- Oh btw, it might help if you started by LPing a game which sucks you in, I mean - my first video was FEAR, and whilst my commentary was a little quiet and spaced at the beginning, by the end of my recording I had become so immersed because of having to react to both the gunfire and the scares that I didn't even notice that I was talking to a video game by the end. Immersion, definitely the key to good live-commentary. When you get a decent run of commentary going, maybe even a full video, you should post it in the feedback section - we might be able to help out

Welcome to the site man hope you enjoy your experience here with everybody on the site and don't worry about starting off with your first let's play walkthrough because everyone here and even some well known lper's didn't sound the way they sound now and even struggle just a little bit in the long run. |

Oh wow, this is really awkward. Not anything to do with you yourself, but just that you're good at public speaking and can't speak in front of a mic, while I suck at public speaking, get all sweaty, stutter, and all that stuff in front of a crowd, but can actually talk into a mic. xD I mean, I'm not the greatest at it, but what you see is me. Anyway, I'm sure it will just come in time. It took TREMENDOUS amounts of practice (Probably 50 episodes of a series with many many re-recordings) to get my videos up to what I consider decent (I'm a blind, live commentator as well), but I think it was worth it. I think live commentary is better for the fact that you CAN be reactionary to some things. Don't scream at everything like Pewdiepie, but if something crazy happens, you get an actual reaction, not some fake one that isn't really you; it's just my opinion, anyways... Just know that you're not talking to yourself, you're talking to us, REAL people. Imagine me (Ohai, my name's Drew) sitting right next to your computer staring at you while you record. O.O If my face doesn't make you laugh with the way you imagine it, you'll be golden, I'm sure. xD In all seriousness, just pretend you're talking to all of your friends on the webbernets and substitute their names in for 'you guys' or 'viewers', Whichever suits your fancy. That's what I did early on. And NO. No elitism here! NEIN! Everyone's really nice, trust me. ![]() Welcome to the site. |

You know, that's one of the main reasons why I chose to join the site. In all honesty, no one here is like that. I've seen how some of the other sites can be myself...but I think they're all missing the point. We're all here because we like to make and watch Let's Plays. Anyway, Welcome to the Sanctuary. I hope you enjoy your stay! ![]() |

Welcome to our community, Cicero! This community was actually started due to a group of us starting LPers being fed up with the elitism inherent in many of the other LP communities, and wanting to create a safe place (hence "Sanctuary") for LPers to come, talk, and enjoy each others work. You are far from alone, Cicero, in your feelings! As to your concerns about LPing: I think it's normal to feel very uncomfortable when you start out with LPing. You said it well: it feels like you are talking to yourself while playing, which is not a natural thing to do. Still, I think Drew made a great point: you're talking to an audience (just like any actor or performer). Some things that I think can help you feel more comfortable with LPing is to talk while you game naturally (without recording) to get in the habit and see what you can come up with, playing/LPing games you know really well to have more things to say, and to try post-commentary (commentary over recorded footage). Doing some post-commentary can help you get used to (again) talking while seeing your footage, and takes the pressure off you of in-the-moment reacting while also trying to play. You can also script things to say with post-commentary, and use the script to remind yourself on key things you want to mention. Anyways, I'm glad you've come to our community, and I hope you enjoy your time here!

I get where you are coming from, I once game across an LP website where there was a minimum number of subscribers a person had to have to join. Talk about jerkish! Anyway, welcome here and I second what everyone else said

Hi Cicero, and welcome to the Sanctuary! As Mr Mar has already pointed out, many of the negative aspects you might observe in other LP forums are directly responsible for this forums creation. We wanted a place were people could come to chat, learn, and simply have fun while participating in this hobby. There's a strong focus on inclusion here, that I'm sure you'll witness first hand as you start to check out the other threads. Regarding your initial videos, it can be a bit strange at first, thankfully I didn't suffer too much trouble myself but I made a point of playing a couple of games while talking aloud, without recording them. So by the time I actually started to LP, I had started to develop habits and a general awareness of how to find funny things to talk about while playing, and I suppose an eye for things that I could focus on in my commentary. Perhaps these sorts of 'practise' runs would help you too? At any rate, I do hope you enjoy yourself here, and look forward to seeing you about the forum
